India Reports on UNV Website
If we are to meet the challenges of climate change,
citizens of developing countries must be equally
involved. In India, a nation of more than a billion
people, 'Volunteering for our Planet' extended across
every area of society - from schools and universities to
the private sector. Read about the multitude of
activities in the country that contributed the largest
number of hours towards the 'Volunteering for our
Planet' campaign.
UN Volunteers and World Youth Forum
The World Youth Forum 2009-10 saw 1382 volunteers and
youth leaders from
many parts of India and the world coming together and
celebrating the spirit
of volunteerism and celebrating life. The venue was the
pristine and gloriously
beautiful Art of Living International Centre.
Voluntary Ideas Turning Green India

India is a rapidly developing country where a billion
plus people live, but paradoxically many of them with a
huge gap in living standards. Environment is a major
concern for the Government, UN and other many
development organizations. Low literacy rate, poverty,
changing lifestyle and rapid industrialization are
reasons, among many others, to climate change, pollution
and other impact of global warming.

International Volunteers Day 2009 report:
UNV India played a role of leadership for IVD 2009
involving Swechha, UNDP India, VSO, American Center,
Times Foundation, Indian Council for Cultural Relations,
Department of Environment Govt. of Delhi, NFI, Tehelka,
NDTV, Radio MEOW, The YP Foundation and Jamghat joined
hands to celebrate and commemorate International
Volunteer Day on the 5th of December 2009. International
Volunteer Day (IVD) was established by the United
Nations General Assembly in 1985 to acknowledge the
potential that volunteers promise towards betterment of
social conditions, promotion of economic development,
and empowering people to take charge.
IVD Celebration in Orissa
United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, United
Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration
with local partners - Centre for Youth and Social
Development (CYSD) and Bakul Foundation - jointly
commemorated the International Volunteer Day (IVD) on
5th December 2009 at Bhubaneswar, Orissa. The theme for
this year’s IVD celebration in Orissa was “Volunteering
for our Planet” which recognized the crucial role of
volunteers in addressing issue like global warming,
climate change and the need for environment protection.
Nearly 700 participants from all across Bhubaneswar and
adjoining areas took part in the IVD celebrations.

Strategic Objective: “Promote and support activities
that will help/facilitate an individual (employee) in
becoming more self conscious and sensitive towards
society and environment; thereby making a lifelong
commitment to voluntarily contribute to one or more
social and/or environmental cause.”

hours to tackle climate change and send a message to world leaders
that everyone is part of the solution.

Peace is more than just the absence of discord or
violent conflict. It encompasses all aspects
of social cohesion – including equality, freedom and the
rule of law. Peace is the necessary prerequisite
for sustainable human development, for equitable access
to resources and services,
and for the full realization of human opportunities and
potential.

Newsletter August 2009

Following an absence of three years, UNV India is
delighted to re-launch the UNV newsletter. The primary
objective of this newsletter is to keep UNV volunteers
and their respective host agencies informed of various
initiatives, activities, projects and policy decisions.
It also brings together UNV volunteers working across
India from districts to states and the national
capital.
Volunteering to make Orissa Green

The 'Green Orissa' campaign was launched in Orissa in July amidst boundless enthusiasm, hope and promise to make the state green through volunteering efforts. The campaign launched in a Bhubaneshwar-based
Government Girl's High School, promotes tree plantation
as a first step to meeting the challenges posed by
climate change.
